Book launch: Critically Engaging Participatory Action Research

On Monday 11th Nov. 2024 the Participatory Geographies Research Group (PYGYRG) of the RGS/IBG hosted a 90-min international online book launch for the volume  Critically Engaging Participatory Action Research (Routledge – Taylor & Francis Group, edited by Sara Kindon, Rachel Pain, Mike Kesby). Over 100 people expressed interest in the event and 42 eventually attended (from across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australasia). Mike chaired, Rachel introduced the project, and Sara sent a pre-recorded video from New Zealand. Contributing authors Caitlin Cahill, Brett Stoudt and Amy Ritterbusch all spoke to their chapters, whilst some others (Kye Askins & Jackie Shaw) sent short, pre-recorded video messages of support. Colleagues from the PYGYRG committee acted as readers and discussants (Bruna Ferreira, Sam Staddon & Niel Turnbull), and the other attendees had opportunity toward the end to engage in an interesting and supportive discussion celebrating the book and exploring the praxes, paradoxes, and potentials of participatory action research. The launch was recorded, and we hope to make some of that material public soon.

The launch followed on from recent ‘online coffee morning’ meetings in which leading figures in the field of Participatory Geographies have been invited to talk about their work and careers in an informal way that members of the PYGYRG group have found both enlightening and supportive. We hope to run more sessions like this in the future and welcome suggestions for topics, formats, and speakers.
